Lecture notes on Sophocles' Electra, ca. 1837-1880.

Ernst von Leutsch's handwritten notes for lectures he gave on Sophocles' Electra. About one fifth of the manuscript (76 leaves) comprises introductory material, addressing aspects such as mythology in the play, the composition of the play, editions of it, performance of it, and the time of its first performance. The remainder of the manuscript is devoted to a detailed commentary on the play; running references to verse numbers extend from 1 to 1490, with more copious commentary in the first half. Evidently compiled over time, the manuscript is made up of individual gatherings of varying appearances, with additional leaves inserted. Among the bibliographical references in the introductory portion, the latest date cited is 1880; based on appearance, the majority of the manuscript probably does not date from very much earlier. There is no certain basis for estimating a beginning date; however, in the sections of the commentary proper written on heavier paper that could be from earlier, the date 1836/37 (at verse 763/804) is among the sparse date references. Accompanying the manuscript is an undated note, apparently written by Penn professor Otto Springer, who, it seems, had read through the manuscript in order to assist in identifying the author; he refers to the commentary as the work of an outstanding scholar of Greek.
